Welcome to another edition of Perspective Wednesday!
Is there such a thing as a “perfect” business plan? I recently posted a quote on my Instagram account, something that I mentioned in a previous episode; it went something like this: “While you’re sitting there trying to come up with the perfect business plan. There’s others out there with a less-than-perfect plan taking action and adjusting along the way.” That particular post got a lot of traction, but something in particular caught my attention.
It was a comment from one of my followers, Will; he is the owner and operator of “Greater Quality Pool Service” - their Instagram account is: GreaterQualityPoolService. He left a comment on that particular post; it was more a question than a comment, I guess. He said: “Is there really a ‘perfect’ plan?”
That question really got me thinking. You see, there are so many potential business owners, many entrepreneurs who are sold on the idea that there is a perfect business plan. Or, maybe they’re not sold on anything but are under the belief that such a plan does exist. And, this can be so detrimental to any business owner. Why? Well, because thinking or believing that there is a “perfect” business plan can only have one effect - at least in my opinion - and that is that it holds people back. It delays any progress. You see, I am of the belief that an imperfect accomplishment is preferable to waiting until the perfect plan arrives. First of all, anything worthwhile will not arrive out of thin air. If you want a “perfect” plan; if you desire a “perfect” plan, then start taking action right now - without worrying about whether your action is perfect or not - and start adjusting along the way. Very rarely will anything come out exactly as planned; in fact, I’m willing to bet that almost never. Yet, if you’re taking action, then that means you’re moving. If the action you’re taking is not moving you forward, then revise the action you’re taking, adjust your strategy and keep trying. The important thing in business is to move. That’s the only way you’ll be able to provide your business an opportunity to succeed in the long term. And, all the while those who think there is a “perfect” plan will probably still be reading some article or book or watching some YouTube video waiting for the “perfect” time to arrive to launch their “perfect” business with their “perfect” business plan. Here’s another way to view it: you can read all about the “perfect” push-up or you can get down and do 10 push-ups right now. Which do you think will have the most effect on your health if you're consistent? Look, I’m not saying not to read or study or analyze the most optimal opportunities related to your business or life. If you want to try cooking a new dish, for example, then obviously you’re going to have to read the recipe or watch a how-to video and then you’re going to have to actually give it a try. All I ask is that you take action. Take action on ideas that you think will move your business forward. Or, at the very least, write down your ideas so that you can further analyze them later in the day. After you do, set a plan in motion so that you can start implementing your idea and start taking action. Remember, you can dream your perfect dream, but if you don’t take action to try to reach it, it will always be just that … a dream. Well, that’s it for today.
